Korean artists don’t usually send me emails or reminders to say: “Hey there, I or we just released new stuff. Make sure to listen to it. (funny wink). End of the message” This isn’t Walt Disney and there’s no way I don’t have to do all the searching by myself. It’s during one of these afternoons of researches that I listen for the first time to Son Seung Yeon’s I’m Not Crazy (Feat. MC Sniper). I found the song among a dozen of others I was busy discovering. I liked it right away admit the song became inevitable in my kpop playlist on my ipod.
I was seduced enough by the song and mostly intrigued by
Son Seung Yeon’s powerful voice to be reasonably interested! She knows how to play
with her voice and has a perfect control of it. It’s never too shouting or screaming and when
she has to sing high notes, it never hurts. Just what I appreciate. Her voice sowehow reminds me of Ali, another singer I like a lot and who has a powerful voice and a perfect crontrol of it.
Son
Seung Yeon won the first edition of The
Voice Korea back in 2012 (with her coach Shin Seung-hun).
Few times after she released a first mini-album The Wings Of An Ugly Duck. The mini-album is a nice mix of RnB
songs, classic ballads like the beautiful Heart
Heart and more pop-rock ones (my favourites ones being the powerful That’s It and When The Moon Is Too Low). To be totally honest I did enjoy the
album and liked some of the songs at once but I hadn’t been blown me away. I tried
it because of the impact I’m Not Crazy had
on me and if I had to say things, not one song of The Wings Of An Ugly Duck produced the same effect.
Instead
of releasing her second mini-album early this year, Son Seung Yeon released a
single, Different Tears Every Day
under a stage name: Sonnet Son (and I didn’t even know it, gosh). Unintentionally
I would say (do I even believe in that?), I felt in love with the song.
Literally I mean. Way after (not too long), my mind made the right connections
and did the link between Son Seung Yeon and her stage name. After
all everything seems logic. I mean your brain is pre-conditions to be “attracted”
or to “appreciate” some tons of voices. Don’t ask me why that’s how it is. I
read it somewhere and believe it. I liked both songs without realizing it was
the same artist. That’s all I know. Our brain can be scary sometimes but surely
efficient!
Her
second mini-album, Sonnet Blooms
(released in July) is more of my taste (again I didn’t dislike the first one ‘cause really I do like it but I feel closer to the second one). It
includes I’m Not Crazy and Different Tears Every Day , two of my
ultimate crushes of the past months, how can I not love Sonnet Blooms? Improbable.
I love it unconditionally. Those two songs along with I Can Hear Your Voice are ridiculously gorgeous. The whole is
just…clean. Yeah that’s it. That’s the word. Clean but not boring. It’s Ok Now is a pure RnB ballad. Sonnet Son promotes this album
with a pop ballad, Love Again, for which
a MV was shoot with the collaboration of 1000 netizen. Indeed they were asked to
answer to the following question: “What do you want to
say to someone who’s hesitant to confess their love?” Original and full suggestions
for those who’re lacking the courage to confess.
Son
Seung Yeon can deploy a large scale of notes and it never seems forced. She’s gaining
recognition because of
her talent but also because of her winning participation in the TV programme ‘Immortal Song 2’.
Son Seung Yeon a.k.a Sonnet Son has definitely
more to show and to sing I just can’t wait to
hear all that. So please don’t make me wait for years, that’s all I have to ask. For the rest take some time to listen to her
and to thank me after.
To download Sonnet Blooms it’s here.
