I don’t know why it took me so long to come with something about Urban Zakapa! I seriously like them a lot and think they disserve some limelight. Not that they need my help or something for that. In January 2013, their second album, 02, was nominated for Korean Music Awards and their single, I Hate You, received two nominations at the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards. Surely they don’t need me but it’s never a bad thing to talk about amazing music. I want people to discover them. Why? Because they’re simply amazing, talented, gifted and because it’s logic… at least in my mind. I agree the latter argument is purely subjective but I can’t hardly fight my feelings, can I? I’m a fan. A huge, hard, unconditional one!
Their latest
mini-album, UZ, released few weeks
ago, called for a review, not a UZ
centred one but more like a general review on the group and their music. The
official released date for UZ was May
28 but somehow I got overbooked and let the time pass. But here I am, ready to
give them some of my time. And I don’t see it like a mere review, it’s more
like a normal duty as a fan. I can’t keep good stuff for myself. Obviously.
Ha!
Urban Zakapa
caught my attention and my ears back in 2011, at the moment their first studio
album, 01, got released. It wasn’t
their first official releases though. The group debuted in 2009 with Café Latte, a fresh, R’n’B song. I
remember having googled them at the time: 9 members, four vocalists and five
instrumentalists. That’s a lot! I can’t even manage to remember all kpop
groups’ members (I’m still working on it), so please don’t add nine other
faces. But honestly I was interested by the music, so no matter the number of
members.
If I liked
most the tracks of 01, I literally
fell for Passing Over A Breakup. Hard
question and no easy answer. But beside the lyrics, I got blown away by the
voices and the harmony. It’s like their voices were naturally made to sing
together. It’s always so normal and effortless for them, it’s incredible. My
heart’s fan is talking here but objectively those guys have something
crazy.
Passing Over A Break-up and 01 marked the beginning of a long love story between Urban Zakapa
and me. After one studio album and two EPs (Café
Latte and Sweety You in 2009), as
a 9 members group, Urban Zakapa became a trio.
Their third
album, Beautiful Day (2012),
officially launched the trio. I don’t exactly know what when wrong. I mean you
don’t get rid of 6 members just because you thought it could be fun. Apparently
a difference of opinions in their music and the future of the group is the main
reason. Too bad, but that didn’t prevent, Kwon
Sun-il, Park Yong-in and Jo Hyun-ah, the three left members to
come with always awesome music. Kwon
Sun-il is a former trainee with SM Entertainment, Park Young-in was part of the
group Bluewind while Jo Hyun-ah was the crew Overclass. Urban Zakapa isn’t their
first experience as singer. The trio writes, composes and produces all their
songs! No wonder they know how to perfectly harmonize their voices.
UZ, their latest mini-album follows four studio albums: 02, 03, 04.
All right, the albums’ names aren’t the toughest to remember, I give you that.
Urban Zakapa is defined as an R’n’B group. I think there’s more than that. They
have a special something, a musical’s signature you can’t simply classified as
R’n’B. It’s their touch, their harmonies, the whole thing I guess. Their music
talks to me. Definitely. My emphasis isn’t merely me liking the melodies, it’s
me feeling all my inside being moved by those songs. Of course they’re songs I
like most but I’m not going into enumerate all my iPod list of Urban Zakapa. I
could take some time. Believe me.
UZ is a good. Like really good. As always I want to add.
It’s pleasure, you know the kind of natural pleasure that isn’t forced or
faked. You just relax, enjoy the moment and even forget that shitty songs could
exist in the world! Get is the first
song (and will probably be the only) released for the mini-album. Beenzimo collaborates on the song. The
latter is more catchy and dancing than the other tracks. It’s even more than
most of their songs. If I was a bit surprised at the first, the song is perfect
and coherent. It remind me a bit of their first album. It’s crazy how they
rarely disappoint me. I always have high expectations (due to our long love
story naturally) and I’m not left down.
The group's name is an acronym for Urban+Zappy+Kaleidoscopic+Passionate. It's complicate but not that much once you've fallen for them. Urban Zakapa's music is sweet, appealing, touching, full of sense, astonishing. It's a pure pleasure.
As usual you can listen to some songs. I took me years to decide which ones to choose but have finally picked Passing Over A Breakup from 01, Different from 03 and Get from UZ. Have also add the lyrics of the first song.
Let yourself be subjugated, it worth it.

Lyrics
Is there a hesitation?
You too, and your heart as well, is forever there
These past days we couldn’t see our faces no matter where we looked
You know that better than anyone
The words that were there in your look
Must have not just wanted to believe
Baby
It’s too hard for me took in mind
Tears in my eyes
Don’t make me cry
Baby you will always stay forever in my heart
In this way
Don’t make me cry no
Baby
Don’t make me cry
Don’t make me cry
There seems to be an increasing distance between us
There’s one thing that’s gone
This is your empty spot
To me it’s all just so unfamiliar
When these times are all over
We will have to realize that we have separated
Baby
It’s so hard for me took in mind
Tears in my eyes
Don’t make me cry
Baby you will always stay forever in my heart
In this way
Don’t make me cry
Baby no, Baby no
I can’t never let never let you go
Remembering you without sadness and
I can’t never let never let you go
Sending off the day without pain and
Even if it seems I got a grip on my heart like that
There is a empty spot
Baby
It’s so hard for me took in mind
Tears in my eyes
Don’t make me cry
Baby you will always stay forever in my heart
In this way
Don’t make me cry
Promise
Good bye
